Ten aces help Rams put away Bulldogs

COLUMBIA, S.C. - After having their win streak broken just under a week ago, CIU volleyball is already on a new streak with their second win in as many matches on Friday. The Rams swept Tennessee Wesleyan 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-22) to move to 22-7 overall and 12-1 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC). The Bulldogs are left searching for their first AAC win of the season, falling to 1-23 on the season and 0-15 in conference play.

Despite the sweep, the Bulldogs battled throughout the evening, including nearly stealing the third set before the Rams finally took control to end the match. Serving played a role in the matches' outcome as CIU had ten service aces compared to three from the Bulldogs. The Rams had three players with three aces each in the form of Alana Sanjurjo, Katie Nichols, and Lesiray Marrero. Offensively, Saskatchewan natives Jadaeya Morrell and Mardi Scutchings led CIU in kills as Morrell struck down 11 kills, and Scutchings contributed nine. Nichols and Sanjurjo added to CIU's kill total, each with seven kills. They both played a role defensively as well, with Sanjurjo digging ten balls off the floor and Nichols digging up 11. Libero Kelcey Mangum led CIU in digs with 13, and junior Kamelia De Jesus guided the Rams' offense with 37 assists.

Up Next: CIU plays arguably their most important regular season match in program history as they host Bryan (Tenn.) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15. The Lions are currently undefeated in conference play and are vying for the top spot in AAC with CIU.
