Oates' 31 points pushes CIU over the century mark in blowout win

COLUMBIA, S.C - Coming off a disappointing loss to start the New Year versus Bryan College over the weekend, CIU men's basketball bounced back with a vengeance on Thursday night. CIU took down St. Andrews (1-14, 1-11 AAC) by a score of 108-79 in their first home game of 2022. The win is the first time the Rams have eclipsed 100 points in a game since an overtime loss to Truett McConnell in December of 2020. CIU moves to 9-6 overall with the win and 5-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).

The game stayed close until the final three minutes of the first half. With the Rams leading 33-32, CIU would close out the half on a 9 to 1 run as they took an 11-point advantage into halftime (43-32). Skyler McKinney shined in the first half, scoring 13 points for CIU in the game's first 20 minutes. The flood gates then opened for the Rams in the second half as CIU outscored the Knights 65-47 after the break. The most notable sequence in the second half came between the 5:08 and 3:18 mark as Darrian Oates knocked down three 3-pointers in that time span, bringing the Moore Fitness Center crowd to their feet.

Oates finished the game an impressive 5 of 6 from the beyond the arc and 10 of 13 from the field as he tallied 31 points just 1-point shy of his career high.

Skyler McKinney also impressed for CIU as the junior went 8 of 12 from the field and 5 of 7 from the 3-point line on his way to 23 points.

Fellow upperclassman Jalen Brinson was just two assists shy of a double-double as the guard had eight assists and 13 points. Christian Howard was the fourth Ram in double-figures as he scored ten points, going a perfect 5 of 5 from the field.

What Coach Tony Stockman is saying:

"Great to be back at the Moore Fitness Center for a home game. Darrian played excellent tonight because he stayed within himself and made the simple play. It was also encouraging to see Skyler play the way he did. If we are going to make a run here in the latter half of the season, those two will have to perform like they did tonight."

Up next:

CIU will take on Kentucky Christian at home on Saturday, Jan. 15. Tip-off is slated for 2 PM.
