CIU Baseball seizes NCCAA South Region crown solidifying trip to NCCAA World Series

COLUMBIA, S.C. - A fantastic first full season for the CIU baseball program will continue as the Rams are headed to the NCCAA World Series after defeating Toccoa Falls in the NCCAA South Region title game on Thursday. CIU knocked off Toccoa Falls for the second time in as many days by a score of 10-5, giving them their fourth win of the season over the Screaming Eagles. The Rams move to 32-26 and complete their run through the NCCAA South Region Tournament, where they went 3-0 as the No. 1 overall seed.

Key Plays:

  • Freshman Price Alexander singled on a fly ball to right field with the bases loaded to bring home Buddy Bleasdale for the first run of the game in the top of the 2nd inning.
  • An error from the Toccoa Falls first baseman allowed two more runs to cross home. Gabe Austin followed up those scores with a three-run homer giving CIU a 6-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 2nd.
  • Price Alexander continued his career day in the top of the 3rd with a two-run double that put CIU up 8-0. The Rams added one more run before the end of the side on a Bryce Spittle sacrifice fly.
  • Toccoa Falls loaded the bases and scored three runs in the bottom of the 3rd as the Screaming Eagles cut the deficit to 9-3.
  • Gabe Austin answered Toccoa in the top of the 4th with a solo blast to left field, putting CIU in double-digit with the 10-3 advantage.
  • Toccoa Falls scored two more runs in the bottom of the 4th, but CIU held the lead for the remainder of the contest. Hunter Garris extinguished any of the Screaming Eagles' comeback hopes as the game's final batter lined out in the bottom of the 7th inning.

Key Players:

  • Price Alexander gave the Rams a boost as he went 2-3 at the plate while notching three RBI's, a double, and reached base on balls.
  • Gabe Austin shined for the Rams with his 13th and 14th home runs of the season and second two-home run game of the tournament.
  • Justin Parish and Jan Maldonado combined for seven strikeouts, but CIU's arms consisting of Parish, Maldonado, Garris, and Dalton Langley walked nine batters.

What Coach Jonathan Johnson is saying:

"I was proud of my guys and how they played this week. I am excited to watch these guys compete for our program's first NCCAA World Series title."
