COLUMBIA, S.C. - With the last day to play countable matches in the NAIA coming up on April 10th, CIU volleyball is making the most of their spring schedule. The Rams took on a fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) program, St. Andrews (5-16), in a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday evening as the Rams dispatched the Knights in both contests. With the wins, CIU now moves to 19-12 overall, just two wins away from their most wins in a season.
GAME ONE - CIU 3 SAU 1 (25-16, 25-13, 25-27, 25-12):
- CIU breezed through the first two sets and then was met with some push back from the Knights in game three. CIU led 23-16 before the SAU clawed their way to a 27-25 come-from-behind win. The Rams would prove how talented they are in game four, easily taking care of SAU 25-12.
- Kira Rymer showed why she's an All-AAC First Team selection as the freshman had 14 kills with an astounding .636 hitting percentage.
- Gabriela Vega stood out with 12 kills and three blocks as she recorded a .360 hitting percentage.
- Kamelia De Jesus was stellar as the Ram's setter, recording 36 assists.
- As a team, CIU was impressive serving as the Rams notched 12 aces; Shaniece Steer and Vega led the way, each with three aces.
GAME TWO: CIU 3 SAU 0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-13):
- CIU was dominant in set one, barely allowing double-digits from the Knights. SAU played a bit more competitive in game two but it was still all Rams as CIU showed they will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in AAC.
- Kira Rymer was once again the Rams leader in kills with 16 while still hitting .484.
- Gabriela Vega was solid all evening with 13 kills hitting .250.
- Defensively, Abbey Kleist and Fabianne Besosa showed up for CIU as Kleist had three blocks, and Besosa added 17 digs.
- Kamelia De Jesus grew her assist total, notching 40, while Shaniece Steer was one kill shy of a double-double with nine kills and 13 digs.
- Carla Cauchi was the Rams leader in service aces with two.
What Coach Amber Haver is saying: "Really great to be back on our home court. Our schedule has kept us on the road this spring, so it was nice to be back in our gym one last time before the end of the craziest season. Having a split season spread over fall and spring has had its challenges, but we've been so grateful to play. These young ladies have shown resilience this year as we've had some obstacles to tackle.
Big goals tonight were about playing disciplined volleyball against a very scrappy, athletic SAU team. Our hitters put up some strong numbers, and our defense got the job done on the backcourt. Overall I'm pleased with these two wins. I am looking forward to finishing out the season with two more matches on Saturday."
Up Next: CIU will stay in South Carolina as they travel to Greenville on Saturday for a tri-match with Bob Jones University and Johnson University starting at 11 AM.
