Upset-minded CIU can't get by No. 5 Faulkner in doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - CIU baseball played their third top-five team on Tuesday as they headed westward to face No. 5 Faulkner University in a nonconference doubleheader. CIU would have opportunities to pick up their 4th and 5th NAIA top-five wins of the season but would be unable to squeeze by Faulkner (20-4) in either game. With the losses, the Rams slip just below .500 in moving to 17-19.

GAME ONE (FU 8 CIU 2): CIU struck first as Grant Bodison singled on a line drive to score lead-off man Rafeal Gonzales in the top of the 1st inning. The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd on a home run and then took the lead on two runs in the 4th inning. Faulkner added four more to the board in the bottom of the 5th, but the Rams struck back in the next inning as Gabe Austin grounded out but scored Kody Trujillo. Then trailing 8-2 in the 7th, Carter Willis would reach third on a Bodison single. Bodison reached second a stolen base, but the Rams could not capitalize, falling to the Eagles 8-2.

GAME TWO (FU 9 CIU 5): CIU once again scored first to start game two as Buddy Bleasdale scored on a wild pitch. After that, it would be all Faulkner as the Eagles scored seven unanswered runs heading into the 6th inning. However, with their backs against the wall, CIU responded as they loaded the bases and then scored on a Bryce Spittle walk. Carter Willis then came up clutch for the Rams picking up a three-RBI double, bringing the score to 7-5. The Rams gave up two more runs to Faulkner in the bottom of the 6th. Kody Trujillo got on base in the top of the 7th, but it was to avail as the Rams ultimately conceded to the Eagles.

Doubleheader Notes:

  • Grant Bodison led CIU, going 3-4 in game one with an RBI.
  • Trent Polly pitched three innings in game one allowing just one run and while picking up a strikeout.
  • Carter Willis added three RBI's to his season total in game two as he notched a double.
  • Brett Collins recorded two K's on the mound in game two while allowing three earned runs in four pitched innings.
What Coach Jonathan Johnson is saying: "Faulkner was a great opponent. They showed why they are a top-five team in the nation. They handled themselves with class and did the little things right. It was great for us to play such a solid team. We will  continue to strive to reach that level of play. "

Up Next: CIU hosts Milligan University at home in an AAC series starting Friday at 3 PM.
