Rams bats unload to split series with Bluefield

BLUEFIELD, Va. - The CIU softball team headed north to battle the Rams of Bluefield College. The game, initially scheduled for last Wednesday, was set to begin at 2 PM local time. The Rams looked to start strong against Bluefield after splitting a series on Saturday against Trinity Baptist College. CIU was able to make good on the second game of the series after dropping game one by narrow margins. 

Game One: 

  • Bluefield struck first in the 2nd inning, as Taylyn Strange reached home on an error by the CIU defense, giving BC a one-run lead. 
  • The Rams battled back in the top of the 3rd, as Robyn Andrews hit an RBI single to left field, sending Heaven Zamora to home plate, drawing even with Bluefield at one all. 
  • CIU gained their first lead of the day in the 4th inning, as Heaven Zamora batted an RBI to center field, allowing Taylor Allen to score. 
  • The lead wouldn't last, however, as Bluefield rallied in the bottom of the 5th inning. Bluefield batted in a runoff of a Kristina Sanchez RBI to center field to tie the game at two-all. Later in the at-bat, Lexi Harmon hit a three-run home run to left field, going up 5-2 on CIU. 
  • The Bluefield rally in the 5th inning was too much for CIU, as BC took game one 5-2. 

Game Two 

  • Bluefield got to work early in the second game, scoring a run in the first inning off a one-run RBI double to right field. 
  • The Rams bats exploded in the top of the 2nd, scoring nine runs. The scoring got started with an RBI double from Kendall Parker. Later in the at-bat, Tanaya Ellis batted in three runs off of a triple to deep right-center. In the next at-bat, Robyn Andrews batted in Tanaya Ellis off of a double to left field, going up 5-1 over Bluefield. The Rams weren't finished, however, as Taylor Allen got involved in the action, batting in another two runs off a two-run RBI double to center field. Kendall Parker would hit an RBI single to left, scoring Shannon Patton from third. Haylee Wilkerson batted in the 9th and final run sending Kendall Parker home. The Rams led Bluefield 10-1, heading into the 3rd inning. 
  • CIU extended its commanding lead in the 3rd inning, as Kaitlynn Creel hit an RBI single to get Tanaya Ellis home going up 10-1 on Bluefield. 
  • Bluefield began to cut into the Rams lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the third off of an RBI double and sacrifice fly. 
  • The Rams kept Bluefield at arm's length, scoring another run, from a Tanaya Ellis one run RBI double to center field, scoring Ashlee Chinn in the process.
  • Bluefield began to get their offense going in the 4th inning, from two RBI singles, cutting the lead to seven runs. 
  • However, the Rams didn't let up as Kendall Parker singled to left field, scoring Kaitlynn Creel, giving CIU a 12-5 lead. 
  • Bluefield wouldn't go away, as they batted in another run to cut the lead to six. 
  • CIU poured on the last two runs in the bottom of the 6th, off of a Tanaya Ellis RBI single toward the pitcher's mound sending Ashlee Chinn home. The last run of the day was scored off a Bluefield error, as Megan Grose's dropped a Robyn Andrews pop fly, allowing Tanaya Ellis to score, giving CIU the 14-6 win. 

Key Players: 

  • Tanaya Ellis had a huge day, hitting four hits, five RBI's, and three runs. 
  • Shannon Patton had a big day batting, with four hits, and two runs. 
  • Kendall Parker had a huge impact batting, recording three hits, two runs, and three RBIs. 
  • Robyn Andrews was also played well with two hits and two RBIs. 

Up Next: The Rams head home tomorrow to finish out the regular season against Union College at 1 & 3 PM.
