CIU topples No.14 Bryan with barrage of home runs

DAYTON, Tenn. - As CIU baseball jostles for position in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) playoff picture, the Rams picked up a much-needed win over No. 14 Bryan College on Friday. CIU defeated Bryan 8-4 in game one of their series with the Lions. The success is essential as CIU (21-21, AAC 11-11) sits in the 8th spot just two games back from Bryan (26-12, 11-9) in the 4th spot. Three different teams each with a 12-10 record in the AAC, reside between CIU and Bryan.

Game One: CIU 8 BC 4: Gabe Austin set a precedent for how the evening would go for the Rams, homering to start the 2nd inning, putting CIU up 1-0. Robert Bell would follow with a two-run home run of his own in the 3rd inning bringing home Grant Bodison for the 3-0 advantage. Bryan responded with another solo homer in the bottom of the inning but still trailed 3-1. CIU would have yet another home run in the 5th, this time off the bat of proven slugger Joshua Hernandez who sent a shot to right field, pushing CIU forward 4-1. The Lions cut into the advantage 4-3, but Buddy Bleasdale answered with a double scoring Alex Miller in the top of the 7th. CIU led off the 8th with their fourth home run as Bodison blasted a fly ball over the left-field wall. One at-bat later, Austin struck again, this time with a two-run home run to put CIU back up by five. A double play helped CIU close out the 8th followed by a one-run 9th inning from the Lions as the Rams secured the 8-4 win.

Game Notes:

  • CIU set the program record for home runs in a conference game as they recorded five coming from four different players.
  • Gabe Austin became the third player in program history to record multiple home runs in a game as he notched two in four at-bats.
  • Despite going 1-5 on the evening, Joshua Hernandez notched his 13th home run of the season.
  • Robert Bell added to his RBI total with two RBI's coming off his 8th homer of the season.
  • With his home run in Friday's game, Grant Bodison has now had four consecutive games with a homer.
  • Right-handed pitcher Justin Parish grabbed his fifth win of the season and his second over a ranked opponent this season. Parish had three strikeouts in six innings while allowing three earned runs.
  • The Rams pick up their third win over NAIA top 25 ranked opponent and their fourth win over a ranked foe all-time.

What Coach Jonathan Johnson is saying:

"Our hitters are finally buying into the process and approaches at the plate. If they continue to swing the bats like they have the last four games, it's going to be a fun finish!"
