MARION, N.C. – CIU Baseball started another Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series on Thursday, playing their first-ever matchup versus the Montreat Cavaliers. The game was played at Big League Camp in Marion; a ballpark with scenic mountain views. CIU (15-17) was looking to get back on track against Montreat (13-21) after dropping their last five games. The Rams battled their way to a come from behind win to get the 12-7 victory. With the win, CIU moves to 7-9 in the AAC.
How It Happened: Third baseman Buddy Bleasdale got things going in the 2nd with a single to left field as Kody Trujillo scored on the throw. Bryce Spittle followed Bleasdale with a pop-out, but Bleasdale would cross home plate, scoring another run after tagging up. Later in the inning, the Rams seized the 3-0 lead after Grant Bodison recorded an RBI single, scoring Skye Foster. After one run from the Cavaliers, the Rams grew their lead in the 4th. Bleasdale scored his second run of the contest on a Montreat error thanks a hard to handle Bodison ground ball, and then Joshua Hernandez was walked with the bases loaded to hand the Rams the 5-1 advantage.
The Cavaliers didn't shy away, however and came storming back to pull ahead, scoring six unanswered to take a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the 6th inning. CIU continued to battle as Robert Bell doubled in the top of the 8th to score Bodison. Moments later, with the bases loaded, a two-RBI single from Bleasdale brought home Hernandez and Bell as the Rams jumped in front 8-7. The Rams would again load the bases in the top of the 9th as Kody Trujillo was hit by a pitch forcing in Rafael Gonzales. The bases stayed loaded as Gabe Austin was walked, scoring Bodison for the Rams 10th run. CIU then turned back to Bleasdale as the third baseman added to his impressive RBI total notching a two-RBI single, giving the Rams a 12-7 advantage. Despite allowing two more runs, pitcher Brett Collins closed out Montreat in the bottom of the inning as CIU picked up their first win all-time versus the program from North Carolina.
