WALESKA, Ga.- The CIU softball team headed to peach state on Thursday afternoon to play the Eagles of Reinhardt University. The Eagles are the No.8 team in the country in the latest NAIA national poll, with a record of 27-5. CIU is fresh off two conference sweeps last week, beating both Columbia College and St. Andrews University. The Rams were looking to carry last week's momentum into the doubleheader on Thursday. Despite two sensational games, CIU was unable to overcome the Eagles of Reinhardt.
Game One
- CIU struck first against the No.8 team in the country, as Haylee Wilkerson homered over the left-field fence on her first at-bat of the 4th inning, giving the Rams a 1-0 lead.
- The Eagles answered CIU in the bottom of the 4th, scoring three runs off of a two-run RBI double and a sac fly to left field, taking a two-run lead over CIU.
- The Rams offense exploded in the top of the 5th inning, scoring seven runs. Wilkerson got the action started for CIU, hitting a two-run RBI double down the left-field line. Later in the at-bat, Shannon Patton singled up the middle to send Wilkerson home. Freshman Hannah Brooke hit a two-run RBI single up the middle, scoring Kendall Parker, and Heaven Zamora. As Sarah Trawick and Hannah Brooke got on base, Tanaya Ellis slammed a two-run RBI double down the left-field line, giving the Rams an 8-3 lead over the Eagles.
- Reinhardt again answered in the bottom of the 5th, scoring six runs off of a three-run RBI double, an RBI single, and a two-run RBI single. The Eagles regained a 9-8 lead over CIU.
- The Rams tied the game in the top of the 7th, scoring off of a Hannah Brooke RBI single again down the left-field line, sending Madison Medlin home.
- With the game tied at nine all, the Eagles had a chance to put the game away in the bottom of the 7th. Despite solid defensive play from CIU, Reinhardt hit an RBI single to right-center, scoring Alexis Griffith, to win the game 10-9.
Game Two
- Game one started relatively slow, with the first runs coming in the 3rd inning as Reinhardt struck first. The Eagles quickly scored four runs in the 3rd, off of two RBIs and a two-run homer from Jill Martinet.
- The Rams cut the lead to three in the 6th inning with a Shannon Patton RBI single, batting in Robyn Andrews.
- CIU attempted to mount a comeback in the 7th. The Rams were in prime position, with bases loaded and one out, as Haylee Wilkerson represented the go-ahead run. Despite the comeback opportunity, Wilkerson grounded into a double play, giving the Eagles the victory.
