Volleyball notches yet another AAC win as they wrap up conference play

WEST POINT, Ga – CIU volleyball played their final match of a drawn-out conference season on Friday as they faced Point University. CIU defeated Point (11-8) way back in September of 2020 and found more of the same success this time around, knocking off the Skyhawk's 3-1. With the win, CIU moves to 17-11 overall, and 13-6 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

How It Happened: CIU controlled the entire first set taking a 20-10 advantage. The Rams would then go a 5-1 run aided by kills from Kira Rymer to take the set 25-11. CIU trailed early in the second set 14-10 but would come storming back. Gabriela Vega recorded back-to-back aces, and then Camri Goodwin added a kill to put away the Skyhawks in set two 25-19. CIU dropped set three 25-22 but bounced back in set four. CIU opened up a 20-12 advantage on a kill from Shaniece Steer, and the Rams never looked back. A Vega kill ended the set, and the Rams won their final conference match of the year.

Game Notes:

  • Freshman Kira Rymer had 16 kills with a .387 hitting percentage.
  • Shaniece Steer had 14 kills to go along with 11 digs.
  • Newcomer Fabianne Besosa led CIU with 25 digs.
  • Gabriela Vega was impressive all around as she notched 9 kills and five blocks while recording her career-high in aces with five.
  • Kamelia De Jesus had another 40 plus assist night as she recorded 41 assists.
  • CIU finishes with their best record in program history and is currently 5th in the conference standings.
What Coach Amber Haver is saying:
"Point's defense has improved a lot this spring. We enjoyed the competition tonight. Happy for a big win after a long road trip at the end of an even longer week."

Up Next:
CIU will wait to see where they are seeded as they participate in the conference tournament in Kingsport, Tennessee, beginning Wednesday, March 24th.
