COLUMBIA, S.C - The CIU Rams baseball team wrapped up the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) series against Point University. The high scoring doubleheader used up every bit of daylight available, but, unfortunately, the Rams came up short on both ends. A 13-11 loss began the day as the Rams struggled to overcome another early deficit, and the Skyhawks of Point University edged out a 4-3 nail-biter to finish off the sweep of the Rams. The losses bring CIU to 10-11 on the season and 4-5 in AAC play.
How It Happened:
The Point University Skyhawks unleashed another offensive barrage in the first game of the double header and led comfortably heading into the bottom of the 6th. A five-run lead highlighted by a
Robert Bell grand slams made the score 11-9 heading into the last 3 frames. A valiant effort by
Hunter Garris on the mound in the late innings came up short, and the Rams were unable to come back.
After the 13-11 loss in game 1, the Rams were bolstered by a spectacular pitching performance by
Trent Polly in game 2. The sophomore went 7-innings strong, allowing just 4 runs. Unfortunately, in the waning hours of daylight, a late rally came up short for the Rams, who left bases loaded to end the game with the score still 4-3.
Game Notes:
- Trent Polly struck out 5 hitters in 7 innings while only allowing 3 earned runs on 10 hits.
- Hunter Garris gave the Rams a lift in game 1, throwing 3 innings and striking out 4 Skyhawk batters.
- Robert Bell totaled 5 RBI on the day, bringing his total to 22 RBI on the season.
- Kody Trujillo aided the Rams offense in both games with a total of 4 RBI on the day.
