Athens, TN - The CIU Rams softball team returned to action Friday afternoon as they made their way to Athens, Tennessee, to take on the Bulldogs of Tennessee Wesleyan University. The Rams were looking to bounce back after two tough losses on the road to College of Coastal Georgia last Thursday. Despite a close second game, the Rams would drop both games to Tennessee Wesleyan.
Game One: CIU 1 TWU 9
- The Bulldogs got right to work in the first inning, scoring five runs off of five hits, to take a commanding 5-0 lead over CIU.
- TWU added onto their lead in the 2nd, scoring off a sacrifice fly to the deep left field, extending the lead to six.
- The Bulldogs scored yet again in the 5th inning, from a double to left-center field, going up 7-0 on CIU.
- The Rams bats finally found some rhythm in the 6th, as Haylee Wilkerson hit a double to center, scoring Madison Swaney from second base to cut the lead to six.
- Despite some signs of life from the CIU offense, the Bulldogs took control in the bottom of the 6th, scoring two runs, winning the game on run rule 9-1.
Game Two: CIU 2 TWU 4
- The Bulldogs got started again early in the second game, scoring a run in the second inning off of an RBI single.
- CIU tied the game in the 4th at one, all off a wild throw from the Bulldogs third baseman. Kaitlynn Creel took advantage of the error, scoring from third base.
- TWU answered back in the next at-bat scoring two runs off of two hits.
- CIU bounced back in the 5th with a steal from junior Tanaya Ellis from third base, cutting the lead to one.
- The Bulldogs scored their 4th and final run of the game in the 6th, off of a double deep down the left-field line, winning the game for the Bulldogs, 4-2.
Key Players:
- Haylee Wilkerson had two hits and an RBI in game one, giving CIU its sole RBI in the contest.
- Tanaya Ellis scored a run off of a steal from third, cutting the lead to one in the second game of the series.
Up Next: CIU stays in Tennessee over the weekend, traveling to play Bryan College tomorrow at 1 & 3 PM.
