Rams overwhelmed by Bulldogs in second half of tightly contested road game

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – Road games are always difficult in college basketball, but this year has been especially bleak away from the Moore Fitness Center for the CIU men's basketball team. (RV) CIU (11-5) is now 2-4 on the road this season after falling to Union College (8-8) on Saturday afternoon. The Rams entered the contest atop the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings but now slip into second place in the league behind Point University with the 94-85 loss to the Bulldogs.

How It Happened:

First Half: CIU 50 UC 49: The Rams and Bulldogs played an incredibly tight first half with the largest lead by any team being a 46-41 advantage by CIU. Corey Benton poured in 21 first half points, going a perfect 7-7 from the line. Skyler McKinney chipped in with 12 points shooting 100% from the field at an unblemished 4-4. CIU shot 50% from the field as a team during the first half, helping them to their one-point halftime lead.

Second Half: UC 94 CIU 85: The Rams gave up the lead in the first minute of the second half and would never regain it. Poor defense plagued CIU as the Rams allowed Union to go 16-27 from the field in the second half. Sophomore Darrian Oates kept CIU in the game scoring 14 second-half points on 5-6 shooting. Unfortunately, the Rams dug themselves a 13-point hole 69-56 and were unable to climb all the way out as they were outlasted by the Bulldogs, 94-85.

Game Notes:

  • Corey Benton scored 25 points on 8-22 shooting.
  • Skyler McKinney scored all of his 12 points in the first half while contributing defensively with three steals.
  • Darrian Oates had 15 points going 2-2 from deep and snatching five rebounds.
  • Senior Elijah Spalding tallied eight points and six boards, while freshman Julio Rodriguez scored eight points, going 2-3 beyond the arc.
  • CIU took good care of the ball, only turning it over seven times.

What Coach Tony Stockman is saying:

"I am frustrated with our focus on the defensive end. Darrian did a great job defensively on Union's Markelle Turner in the second half, but we gave up to many layups and offensive rebounds. They shot well, but part of that was bad defense; we have got to try and make corrections before Tuesday."
