TOCCOA FALLS, Ga. – After several cancellations over the past two weeks, the CIU baseball team time finally got in a double-header Saturday against NCCAA foe Toccoa Falls College (TFC). CIU took advantage of the opportunity picking up their first two wins of the season, defeating the Screaming Eagles in both contests. The Rams held Toccoa Falls to two runs over both games knocking off the team from Georgia, 4-1 in game one and 3-1 in game two.
How It Happened:
Game One:
It was a relatively quiet first two innings for both teams, but CIU heated up in the third inning. Joshua Hernandez homered to left field to start the inning, and teammate Robert Bell followed up Hernandez with a deep shot of his own in the next at-bat. Bryce Spittle looked to keep the momentum going for CIU, following up Bell's homer with a single, but CIU would fail to score again in the inning. Toccoa Falls answered CIU with a run of their own in the bottom of the third, but it would be the only score of the game the Rams allowed. CIU got back on the board in the seventh inning after Hernandez doubled and then a Spittle double scored Hernandez. Spittle scored the final run of the contest on a Buddy Bleasedale ground out.
Game Notes:
- Brett Collins and Trent Polly were both reliable on the mound for the Rams. Collins started and pitched five innings recording three strikeouts and allowing a run while picking up the win. Polly pitched the final two innings allowing two hits in at eight at-bats while notching a strikeout.
- Joshua Hernandez led CIU with an RBI, two hits, and two runs in just three at-bats.
- CIU spread the wealth as four different players picked up an RBI.
Game Two: The third inning would once again favor the Rams as CIU loaded the bases after Bryce Spittle was walked. Carter Willis then scored on a TFC error as Buddy Bleasedale reached first base. In the next at-bat, Alex Miller notched a two-RBI single scoring Spittle and Robert Bell. The Screaming Eagles homered in the bottom of the fifth to score their lone run of the contest. CIU's defensive held in the final two innings as the Rams picked up their second win of the day.
Game Notes:
- Alex Miller had two RBI's and three hits in just three at-bats.
- Tyler Parker impressed in game two as he pitched just over six innings recording six strikeouts and allowing only three hits. Parker picked up his first win of the young season.
- Hunter Garris closed out the seventh inning for CIU, allowing no runs or hits.
What Coach Jonathan Johnson is saying:
"Great performances today from Brett Collins and Trent Polly in game one, and Tyler Parker and Hunter Garris in game two. We made some great adjustments at the plate that resulted in six extra base hits on the day. We are starting to settle in as a team. I am excited for what we can accomplish in the next few weeks".
