CIU Volleyball notches 30th win of the season in first match of NCCAA pool play

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - CIU opened pool play at the NCCAA Women's Volleyball National Championship hosted by the College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Thursday afternoon. The match was perhaps the most important of pool play for the Rams as CIU took on fellow NAIA opponent No. 6 seeded Trinity International (Ill.). The Trojans (20-16) put up quite the fight against the Rams (30-9); however, CIU would eventually come out on top 3-1 (25-21, 27-29, 25-14, 25-21). The win is especially notable because it gives CIU and Coach Amber Haver their 30th win of the year as Haver's 2021 squad becomes the first team in program history to win 30 matches.

The match's first set was back and forth early before CIU would pull away late. Set two was a different story as the Rams could not quite put away the pesky Trojans. CIU led 24-21 before Trinity clawed back to take a 29-27 set two victory. After an easy set three win for CIU, set four looked as if it would mirror set two, with the Rams leading most of the set, the Trojans once again came back to tie the set at 20-20. However, a block from Alana Sanjurjo would break the tie propelling the Rams forward for the 25-21 victory.

Kira Rymer had arguably one of the best matches by an opposite side hitter in CIU Ram's history. The China Grove, N.C. native, recorded 19 kills and only two errors for a .586 hitting percentage. Alana Sanjurjo was excellent as well, with a double-double picking up 11 kills and 12 digs. Setters Kamelia De Jesus and Lexabel Rojas each had double-digit assists as De Jesus tallied 30 and Rojas picked up 12. Fabianne Besosa was instrumental for CIU as she filled in for an injured Karla Rodriguez at the libero position. Besosa notched 11 digs and three aces.

What Coach Amber Haver is saying:
Proud of the girls. Faced some adversity tonight with some injuries early on. Glad we were able to settle down and make adjustments to secure the win.

Up Next:
The Rams continue pool play tomorrow, Friday, Dec. 3, taking on College of the Ozarks (Mo.) at 11:15 AM CT and Campbellsville (Ky.) at 2:45 PM CT.
