SUMTER, S.C. - The CIU men's basketball team opened up the 2021-2022 season on the road Tuesday against Voorhees College (S.C). The Rams came into the contest with a lot of questions surrounding their young team after losing most of their firepower from last season. However, many of those questions were answered as the Rams knocked off the Tigers 79-58 for their first win of the season. The victory gives the Rams a solid start to the season as Vorhees was an NAIA National Tournament team last season and is consistently a quality NAIA program.
The Rams were led all night by sophomore Bryce Causey, who went an impressive 7-11 from the field, scoring 16 points while knocking down two three-pointers and recording eight rebounds. Fellow CIU sophomore DiAnthony Heathcock was equally impressive with eight boards and 12 points. Senior Thomas Woods was deadly from outside as he drilled four triples on seven attempts from deep, totaling 14 points. Freshman Jaylon Jeter was also accurate from beyond the arc, going 3-4 from three, scoring 15 points in his collegiate debut. The Rams won the contest on the glass, however, as CIU out-rebounded the Tigers 41-27.Â
What Coach Tony Stockman is saying:Â
"Great to start the season with a win. I am proud of how our guys played hard all evening. There is a lot to improve on, but I am excited for the process."
