Rams Take #9 Truett-McConnell to the Wire

COLUMBIA, SC - The CIU Softball team traveled to Cleveland, Georgia on Monday, to face off against the #9 Truett McConnell Bears. After an impressive weekend against Milligan College, the Rams looked to carry this winning momentum to Cleveland. However, after two hard-fought games, the Rams would fall just short of toppling the Bears of Truett McConnell. 

Game 1: CIU 1 TMU 4 
How It Happened:

  • The Bears inched out to a one-run lead in the 2nd inning off of an RBI single. 
  • Truett McConnell batted in another run in the 4th inning. They would strike again in the 5th, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. 
  • The Bears earned their last run of the game in the 6th inning off of a sacrifice fly to deep center, leading the Rams 4-0 heading into the top of the 7th. 
  • The CIU bats came alive in the 7th inning with a Madison Janning single. Haylee Wilkerson would pinch run for Janning, as a Tanaya Ellis singled to right-center field, moving Wilkerson to third. Later in the side, Alyssa Allender hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Wilkerson in the process, giving CIU it's only run of the day. Despite a late attempt to rally, the Rams would concede game one to the bears. ​​​​​
Box Score Highlights 
  • Tanaya Ellis led the Rams in batting with two hits in four at-bats. 
  • Haylee Wilkerson scored the Rams only run of the day in the 7th inning. 

Game 2: CIU 0 TMU 1 
How It Happened: 

  • CIU bats got to work early in the 1st inning, with base hits coming from Ashlee Chinn, and Kendall Parker. 
  • Alicia Wallick got the start on the mound, surrendering only three hits through the first five innings. 
  • The Rams got to work on offense in the top of the 5th inning, with base hits from Kaylyn Devaney and Tanaya Ellis. Despite good hitting in the inning, CIU wasn't able to bat in any runners leaving the game in a stalemate heading into the 6th inning. 
  • As the pitching duel headed into the 6th inning, Truett McConnell was able to break through with a sacrifice fly out, giving the Bears a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 7th. 
  • Despite great pitching and defensive play by CIU, the Rams were unable to draw even with the Bears, losing a hard-fought competition 1-0. 

Box Score Highlights

  • Alicia Wallick pitched a complete game giving up only six hits and one run. 
  • Kaylyn Devaney led the Rams in batting with two hits.

The Rams stay in Georgia, as they are set to do battle with Brenau University tomorrow, at 4/6 PM.
