Rams Host First AAC Foe of the Season

Columbia, SC- CIU softball was back at home on Tuesday, as they looked to begin conference play against Tennessee Wesleyan University. After a hard-fought day on the diamond, the Rams ultimately conceded both games to the Bulldogs. 

Game 1
How it happened: 

  • The Bulldogs struck first, scoring one run off a double toward right field. 
  • Tennessee Wesleyan scored their second run of the day on a double to deep center scoring Haley Hinshaw from second base. 
  • The Rams held the TWU to two runs and looked to rally in the 7th inning. The Bulldogs had other plans as they went on to score three runs in the top of the 7th, giving them a commanding 5-0 lead. 
  •  Despite getting three on base in the bottom of the 7th, the rams weren't able to rally gains the bulldogs and fell short in a 5-0 loss. 

Box score highlights: 

  • Tanya Ellis had an impressive day in the field, picking up five PO (Put Outs) 

Game 2 
How it happened: 

  • The Bulldogs gained the lead in the second inning, with a RBI single from Callie King. 
  • CIU held the Bulldogs to a 1-0 lead heading into the top of the 4th inning. 
  • The Tennessee Wesleyan exploded in the 4th inning, picking up five runs, making it a 6-0 game. 
  • The Rams would answer the Bulldogs in the bottom of the 4th as Kaylyn Devaney scored off of a wild pitch, giving the Rams the first and only run of the day. 
  • The Bulldogs added to their lead in the 5th, scoring two more runs. 
  • Tennessee Wesleyan would score two more times in the 7th, making the final score 10-1. 

Box Score Highlights: 

  • Kaylyn Devaney scored the only run of the day for CIU. 
  • Tanaya Ellis had another solid game, leading CIU in batting with two hits. 

What Coach Allen is saying: 

"It wasn't a bad day for us, and I think we did a lot of things well. Overall our pitching is improving and we're figuring out more of who we are. The bottom line is we need to get better, especially at scoring the runners we're getting on base and minimizing the mistakes. We're going to keep fighting, though, so I expect us to bounce back well."

CIU stays home on Friday as they look to host Bluefield College in a doubleheader at 1 & 3 PM.
