COLUMBIA, SC – The CIU Rams women's basketball team took the floor at home for the final time this season on Wednesday night as they hosted the Knights of St. Andrews University. The last meeting between the two squads turned out favorably for the Rams as CIU defeated St. Andrews in Laurinburg in early November. Just as the first contest did tonight's game would come down to the wire, but unfortunately for CIU scrappy defensive from the Knights led to a 66-62 victory for St. Andrews.
How It Happened
First Half: SAU 31 CIU 29: Despite the trailing by as much as 26-13 early in the second quarter, CIU would make a late first-half run. The Rams would outscore the Knights 16-5 in the final 7:00 minutes of the half to trail only by two going into the break. Jordan Sprueill had 13 first-half points to lead the Rams in their comeback.
Second Half: SAU 66 CIU 62: The storyline for CIU in the second half was their ability to knock down the three-point shot. After going 1 of 9 from deep in the first half, CIU would drill four triples in the fourth quarter. Queeneka Howard would nail back to back deep balls with 4:00 minutes left in the fourth to tie the game at 55-55. However, the Knights would bounce back to take a 63-59 lead with :24 seconds remaining until a traditional three-point play from Jordan Sprueill brought the St. Andrews lead to just one. The Rams were unable to close and the Knights squeaked past CIU 66-62.
