GAINESVILLE, GA – After having their game canceled last Saturday against Brenau University, the Rams played a makeup contest with the Golden Tigers on Monday night. Both teams are out of the playoff race in the AAC but needed a win to finish in a more favorable spot in the conference standings. After a tight gamer between the two teams earlier this month in Columbia, both sides would once again play a competitive game in their second meeting. However, the Eagles would pull ahead late to defeat the Rams, 70-67.
How It Happened:
First Half CIU 34 BU 28: The Rams would lead for the majority of the first quarter after Joy Jones scored the first basket of the game. The Rams senior duo of Jordan Sprueill and Jay Mazyck helped the Rams extend the advantage. Sprueill scored in the paint, and Mayzk knocked down a triple to put the Rams up 15-11 just before the end of the quarter. Mazyck started the second quarter by nailing another deep ball, and Renee Carter finished inside to put CIU up by six, 20-14. The Rams would keep the edge going into halftime, 36-32.
Second Half: BU 70 CIU 67: Queeneka Howard opened the half scoring four straight for CIU, and Jay Mazyck continued to shoot well for the Rams. Despite strong offensive play, the Rams were unable to consistently get stops on defense and found themselves deadlocked at 53-53 at the end of the third period. The Rams fell behind early in the fourth but regained the lead on a Keniah Watkins layup with 3:59 minutes remaining. The Golden Tigers bounced and tied the game 67-67 with 43 seconds left in regulation. The Rams were unable to score on the ensuing possession, and Brenua would score at the horn to defeat CIU in a heartbreaking fashion.
