Sprueill Eclipses The 1,000-Point Mark In Upset Victory

COLUMBIA, SC – CIU Women's basketball's Jordan Sprueill did what she does almost every game; lead her team in scoring. However, Wednesday night would be different as the graduate student's 25 points would help her eclipse the 1,000 career point mark. Most importantly, Sprueill helped lead the Rams to an upset victory over the Milligan College Buffaloes. The Buffs entered the evening fighting for an AAC playoff spot, but CIU would be too much to handle picking up a double-digit conference win over Milligan.

How It Happened:

First Half MC 24 CIU 23: The Buffs took a 10-4 four lead over CIU to start the first quarter. However, Jordan Sprueill would score six points to end the quarter to keep CIU in it, 16-10. The Buffs took a 20-10 advantage, but CIU would answer with 12-2 run of their own to tie the game. Tiona Walls was instrumental in the Rams push scoring inside twice over Buff's defenders. The Rams would trail by just one, 24-23, at halftime. Sprueill led all scorers at halftime with 13 points.

Second Half CIU 64 MC 54: Strong defense by Queeneka Howard and punishing play inside from Sprueill would give the Rams 18 points in the third quarter. Another heady play in the paint from Walls gave the Rams as much as an 8-point lead in the period, but would CIU would only lead 41-37 heading into the fourth. Sprueill passed the 1,000 point milestone at the beginning of the fourth quarter to put the Rams up 47-43. From there, it would be all CIU as Howard and Walls paced the Rams to give CIU the decisive 64-54 victory.

Jordan Sprueill Post-Game:

Game Notes:

  • With her 25 point night, Jordan Sprueill became only the second women's basketball player to wear the Rams uniform and score 1,000 points in a career.
  • Sprueill also picked up another double-double notching 14 rebounds.
  • Promising freshman Tiona Walls had 10 points in the win.
  • Queeneka Howard battled her way to 11 points and 9 rebounds.
  • CIU outrebounded Milligan 46 to 35.

Coach Temple Elmore Quotables:

"The win against Milligan was an excellent win for us. Our players have shown so much character this season. We never give up. Our defense, on several occasions, was stifling. We played together, cut way down on turnovers, and made good decisions. I am incredibly proud of our players.

"Jordan Sprueill became only the second player in CIU Women's Basketball history to achieve 1000 points, and she did it in only three seasons. Jordan comes to every practice and every game giving it all she has, and tonight she was rewarded for her effort."
