CIU Continues Home Win Streak In Blowout Of Buffs

COLUMBIA, SC – The CIU Rams men's basketball team won their 10th home game Wednesday evening as they got the best of the Milligan College Buffaloes. CIU entered the game sitting at 11-9 and in desperate need of a conference win to distance themselves from the middle of the pack in the AAC. With playoff implications on the line, the Rams showed up in a dominant 79-48 win over the third-place Buffs. CIU now sits in fifth place in the conference standings and is poised to grasp top seeding in the AAC tournament.

How It Happened:

First Half CIU 42 MC 16: In a game that they would never trail the Rams took a double-digit lead, 17-5 off of a three-pointer from Skyler McKinney just 7:48 into the contest. The Rams blazed ahead, going on a 9 to 2 run lead by senior Jeff McIlwain to extend the advantage to 26-7. The Rams would not take their foot off the gas and continued to increase their lead to 34-12 on four straight points from Corey Benton. CIU went into the half up 42-16, holding the Buffs to just 21% shooting from the field.

Second Half CIU 79 MC 48: Elijah Spalding brought energy off the bench in the second half holding the Buffs at bay early, knocking down two free throws and pounding the glass. Milligan made a small run to cut into the deficit, but an and-one from McIlwain quickly brought momentum back to the Rams up 56-29. Corey Benton continued to shoot well for CIU, helping extend the advantage to 30-points 63-33 with 7:00 minutes remaining. Brandon Doss was a spark off the bench for the Rams as the sophomore scored seven points down the stretch and picked up a steal leading to an Eric Graham left-hand throwdown. CIU would mercifully finish out Milligan 79-48.

Game Notes:

  • Junior sharpshooter Corey Benton scored 21 points on 7 of 13 shooting in only 19 minutes.
  • Center Jeff McIlwain had 18 points and 9 rebounds while stuffing the stat sheet with 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 4 steals.
  • Elijah Spalding had 10 rebounds, 4 of which came on the offensive end.
  • CIU currently has a conference-best 10-1 record at home, having won 10 straight in the confines of the Moore Fitness Center.

Coach Tony Stockman on the win:

"Great team defense helped us get the win today. We had a game plan, and the guys were focused on it. Jeff played a big role on defense, protecting the rim and being a force on the offensive end.

Up Next:

CIU will stay in Columbia to battle the Eagles of Reinhardt University on Saturday, February 15th.
