GAME 1
Babson Park, FL – The CIU Rams baseball team pulled a stunning 5-2 upset Saturday afternoon as they knocked off the #16 Webber International University Warriors. The game was only the second collegiate baseball game in CIU history, the first coming in a 5-4 loss to the Warriors Friday night. The Rams not only handily knocked off a ranked opponent but an opponent who was the runner up in the Sun Conference and made a deep NAIA National Championship run in 2019.
How It Happened
Joshua Hernandez doubled to send Shane Hammonds across home plate to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead in the third inning. CIU's bats would go quiet until the top of the 6th when the Rams caught fire. Two runs were scored by Hernandez and Grant Bodison, who got on base and then scored off Warrior errors to give CIU a 3-0 advantage. The Warriors would strike back with a run of their own, but the seventh inning would be all Rams. A Gaven Causey shot to left field at the top of the seventh would turn into an RBI as Jake Lewis would score off of the sophomore's single. Later in the inning, the Rams would score yet again as Buddy Bleasedale connected with the ball sending Causey home to give CIU their largest lead of the game 5-2.
Good offense would be nothing without great defense, and the Rams got just that, out of pitcher Justin Parish. The Georgia native held the Warriors scoreless through five innings while posting six strikeouts. Kyle York closed the game for the Rams recording three strikeouts keeping the Warriors bats at bay in the ninth inning to seal the win for CIU.
