Rams Challenge Undefeated Reinhardt With Competitive Match

WALESKA, Ga. – CIU Women's Volleyball traveled to Reinhardt University Thursday night to play the first match of a Thursday-Friday, home and away doubleheader. The Rams hoped to knock off the undefeated Eagles, and while they weren't able to come away with the win each set was extremely competitive. CIU moves to 6-5 with the loss while Reinhardt moves to 10-0 on the season.

How It Happened:
Set One: The Rams opened up set one with a 6-2 lead in part to errors from the Eagles and two kills. The Eagles bounced back, and a close set would ensue. The Rams would fall behind but pull back within one, 21-20, behind a kill from Abbey Kleist. Despite a hard-fought set, the Rams dropped the set 25-22.

Set Two: Four early kills from Shaniece Steer helped CIU keep pace with Eagles, but the Rams fell behind 21-12. However, after a block by Kira Rymer and Steer gave the Rams new life, CIU would score 5 answered points to cut the advantage to 21-17. Despite the run it wasn't quite enough to bring CIU back as the Rams fell 25-21.

Set Three: The final set of the match was the closest, but CIU did trail 16-9 until a kill from Gabriela Vega brought the advantage down to six. The Rams came barreling back spurred on by an Emilia Niedzielska ace to get within one point, making the score 20-19. The Eagles pushed forward, but CIU came as close as 24-23 before the Rams yielded to Reinhardt 25-23.

Game Notes
  • Despite not having her usual kill totals, sophomore Megan Lung was critical to the Rams' success with 3 aces.
  • Freshman Shaniece Steer continued her strong season; recording 17 kills with a .350 hitting percentage.
  • Setter Kamilia De Jesus notched 30 assists in helping contribute to the Rams 37 kills.

What Coach Haver is saying:
"Proud of the energy and effort tonight against an excellent Reinhardt team. We identified areas where we need to improve and we grew as a program. Looking forward to a rematch tomorrow night."
