Rams Unable To Overcome Late Push From Cavaliers

MONTREAT, N.C. – The CIU Rams women's basketball team played their final regular-season game before the Thanksgiving break on Tuesday as they challenged the Montreat Cavaliers. CIU entered the game coming off a tough loss to Point University, while the Cavaliers came in off a win over Bob Jones University. The Rams held stout for most of the game versus the Cavaliers, but Montreat pulled away late for a 69-57 win. The Rams move to 3-4 overall, and the Cavaliers are now 3-3.

How It Happened:
First Half: MC 43 CIU 34: The Rams led 18-13 with 2:23 left in the first quarter, but the Cavaliers went in a 12-0 run to lead CIU 25-18 at the end of the first quarter. The Rams and Cavaliers played an even second quarter, but Montreat took a 43-34 lead into the half. The Rams saw good play in the paint during the first half as Jordan Sprueill scored 8 points in the first quarter while junior Hannah Trawick had 6 points in the second quarter.

Second Half: MC 69 CIU 57: Behind Keniah Watkins, the Rams started the third quarter on a 13-4 run to tie the game at 47-47. The game would stay deadlocked at 51-51 going into the fourth quarter. The Rams were unable to find the bottom of the net in the fourth quarter scoring only 6 points and going 3 for 13 from the field. Montreat was able to muster a late push to win the game 69-57.

Game Notes:
  • The Rams posts led the way for CIU as Jordan Sprueill had 16 points, and Hannah Trawick scored 10 points. The pair shot a combined 80% from the field, going 12 for 15.
  • Sprueill was close to a double-double with 8 rebounds while Jordin McQueen also pulled down 8 boards.
  • Trawick was the backbone of the Rams defense with 2 blocks and 3 steals.
  • Keniah Watkins continues pouring it in as the junior had 15 points and 5 assists.
What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying:
"With the game tied going into the fourth, we needed a push. Unfortunately, we didn't get that tonight. We need to get healthy and get back to playing how we should. Perseverance and consistency is the goal!"

CIU will travel to North Charleston to take on NCAA DI Charleston Southern in an exhibition at 1 PM. The game will be broadcast on ESPN +.
