NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. – After a conference road game at Montreat College on Tuesday evening, the Rams had a quick turnaround on Wednesday as they played Charleston Southern University in an exhibition contest. The game was the fourth meeting all-time between the NCAA Division I Buccaneers and the Rams. CIU has never beaten CSU, but the Rams would play the Bucs close in the first half and ultimately concede to CSU 79-52.
How It Happened:
First Half: CSU 34 CIU 30: The Rams showed just how talented they are in the first quarter keeping pace with the Division I team. CIU would take a lead midway through the first quarter off a
Zion Neat three-pointer 11-9. The Rams would give up the lead but were tied with the Bucs at 20-20 at the end of the first quarter. Both teams struggled to score in the second quarter, but CSU began to pull away, taking a 34-26 advantage with 1:13 remaining in the half. However, two scores from the Rams, one from
Keniah Watkins and one from
Briyaun Stewart brought the Rams within just four points, 34-30 at the half.
Second Half: CSU 79 CIU 52: The Rams were only able to score 12 points in the third quarter and fell behind by double digits. The Rams received a burst of momentum from back to back threes from
Zion Neat and
Jordin McQueen to cut the Buc's lead to 57-48 to start the fourth quarter. However, 9-points would be the closest the Rams got as they fell 79-52.
Game Notes:
- Freshman Zion Neat was 1 rebound away from a double-double as she recorded 16 points and 9 rebounds.
- Keniah Watkins scored 12 points and dished out 6 assists.
- Neat's high school teammate Briyaun Stewart was productive for CIU with 9 points and 7 boards.
- 79-52 is the smallest margin of victory for a NCAA Division I team over CIU, and it is the most points the Rams have scored against a Division I opponent.
What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying:
"I'm very proud of how we executed today, I thought good basketball was played. We got stops and offensively were as good as we have been all year. We were making shots in the first half, and unfortunately, we couldn't get it to fall late. I wanted to compete against CSU, and my girls did just that."
Up Next:
The Rams will be back on the road after Thanksgiving, traveling to Cleveland, Georgia to face Truett McConnell University on Wednesday, December 2nd.
