WALESKA, Ga. – The playing field in the Appalachian Athletic Conference for women's basketball appears to the most level it has been in a few years as the CIU Rams have already played their fair share of close games in just five contests. The Rams headed to Georgia to face the Point University Skyhawks Saturday coming off a win over Milligan University on Thursday. The Rams hoped to continue their winning ways after two consecutive AAC wins but lost to Point in a nailbiter, 73-70.
How It Happened:
First Half: PU 36 CIU 30: Quarter one was a struggle for CIU as the Rams lost the period 27-12. Poor shooting hurt CIU in the first quarter as the Rams were 4 of 13 from the field.
Zion Neat was crucial in the second quarter scoring 7 points.
Justice Mazyck hit a big three with 2:00 minutes remaining in the half to cut the lead to 36-28. Neat scored again before the end of the half, and the Skyhawks took a 36-30 lead into the break.
Second Half: PU 73 CIU 70: The Rams were able to hold the Skyhawks to just 12 points in the third quarter, and the Rams were able to take a 2-point lead 48-46.
Jordin McQueen was instrumental to the Rams cause in the third quarter scoring 6 points. Neat hit a shot from deep with 6:46 remaining giving CIU their biggest fourth-quarter lead 59-55. The Rams were unable to hang onto the lead despite scores from Neat and
Keniah Watkins down the stretch. An and-one from
Jordan Sprueill with just a few seconds left to cut the Point led to just 2-points, but CIU still fell, 73-70.
Game Notes:
- Freshman Zion Neat stepped and scored 23 points and had 10 rebounds, recording both her season-high in points and her first career double-double.
- Keniah Watkins had 10 points knocking down two triples and shooting 50% from the three-point range.
- Sophomore Tion Walls continues to impress with 9 points and 7 rebounds.
- The Rams reached double-digit steals recording 11.
What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying:
"What a battle today. I didn't think we played well in the first half, but we picked it up in the second to go on a little run. At the end of the day, our turnovers got the better of us. One win doesn't make us, and one loss doesn't break us. We'll be ready for Tuesday."
Up Next:
CIU will stay on the road for their next game as they take on Montreat College in North Carolina on Tuesday, November 24th.
