Volleyball Falls to Top Seeded Eagles

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The CIU women's volleyball team had a quick turnaround on Friday afternoon as they played their second match at the NCCAA DI Volleyball Championship. After narrowly falling to Dallas Baptist on Thursday, CIU would take on the top-seeded Eagles from the host school, the University of Northwestern. The Rams would make a comeback push in the third set, but CIU ultimately dropped the match 3-0 to UNW. The Eagles are perennial power from the NCAA DIII ranks and the favorite to win the NCCAA DI Volleyball National Championship.

How It Happened:
Set One:
The beginning of the match was toughest for CIU as the Rams struggled in the first set. Camri Goodwin was a bright spot for the Rams as she got a kill early on to keep CIU close only trailing the Eagles, 6-5. From there, a 10 to 1 run surged UNW forward and they sailed to 25-13 for a set one win.

Set Two: Kira Rymer was instrumental in attacking for CIU in the second set, but CIU trailed from the start. Rymer and Megan Lung picked up a block to push the Rams a bit closer 24-15, but the Ram's success was fleeting as they lost the set on the next play due to a service error.

Set Three: Alana Sanjurjo started the third set with a kill and the Rams would lead 3-2 after a strong attack from Shaniece Steer. The Eagles then outpaced CIU taking a sizable advantage. The Rams were able to get within four, 20-16 behind errors from UNW. It was as close as the Rams came however as the Eagles held CIU at bay to win 25-20.

Game Notes:
  • Kira Rymer led the way for CIU with 7 kills and only 1 error.
  • Emilia Niedzelska was stalwart for the Rams with 8 digs.
  • Shanice Steer had 8 kills, 5 digs, and 1 ace but also recorded 6 attacking errors.
What Coach Haver is saying:
"This was such a great experience for our young program. Our goal is always growth. Traveling across the country to play against phenomenal teams like Dallas Baptist and volleyball powerhouse, Northwestern, is what makes us better. We are a program with big goals, this was a great step toward meeting them.  The best is yet to come."

Up Next:
The Rams will be back in action in the spring of 2021 to finish up regular season play and compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament.
