Skyhawks Trip Up Rams In Overtime

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The CIU men's basketball team played their third Appalachian Athletic Conference game of the week Saturday as they took on the Point University Skyhawks. CIU had bigs wins over Union College and Montreat College early in the week but were unable to take down Point. The Rams would play their second overtime game in 48 hours and fell to Point 82-78.

How It Happened:
First Half: Point 37 CIU 35: The Rams led 20-17 midway through the first half. However, CIU let the lead slip, and Point took a 37-35 lead into the half. Eric Graham led the Rams with 10 points in the half while Skyler McKinney had 11 points in the first half. The Rams struggled from beyond the arc, going 4 of 16.

Second Half: Point 68 CIU 68: A back and forth affair ensued in the second half as both teams jockeyed for the lead. The Rams led 64-60 with 4:39 left after a Corey Benton free throw. However, Point would tie the game at 65-65 with just under 2:00 minutes remaining. The Skyhawks then scored inside for a 2-point advantage; on the next possession, Skyler McKinney hit a huge three-point shot with 8 seconds remaining to give CIU the 68-67 lead. Unfortunately, a foul on the other end allowed Point's Taylor Gentrell to tie the game and send it into overtime.

Overtime: Point 82 CIU 78: Poor shooting plagued the Rams in the extra period as they went 3 for 10 from the field and allowed the game to slip away, 82-78.

Game Notes:
  • Skyler McKinney had 22 points going 5-6 from beyond the arc; the sophomore also had 8 rebounds.
  • Senior Corey Benton had a somewhat quiet 18 points but still scored in double figures all four of the Ram's games so far.
  • Eric Graham scored 14 points and was 2 rebounds shy of a double-double with 8 rebounds.
What Coach Stockman is saying:
"We are having some good early season tests to start the season. These games are good for us to grow as a team and come together to try to win close games like the one tonight. We had a hard time making shots, and the guys were tired. I am proud we were able to get it to overtime. We have got to continue to get better and grow as a team. Hard games like tonight help us do that."

Up Next:
The Rams will be back in action next Saturday, 4 PM, against Tennessee Wesleyan University at the Moore Fitness Center.
