Bluefield Slips By CIU in Tight Match

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After winning five matches in a row, the CIU Women's team returned home to the Moore Fitness to challenge the Bluefield College Rams. It was an important match as the contest's results will have implications for seeding in the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament in the spring.  The match ended up being one of CIU's closest of the season as it took five sets to find a result. CIU eventually fell 3-2 to Bluefield as CIU moves to 11-6  on the season and Bluefield moves to 7-5.

How It Happened:

Set One: The first set was incredibly close throughout its entirety. CIU found themselves tied at 28-28 when they were able to force a Bluefield error.
Emilia Niedzielska then came up clutch to win the set with an ace, 30-28.

Set Two: Despite 8 combined kills between Megan Lung and Alana Sanjurjo in set two, Bluefield was able to eke out a 25-22 win.

Set Three: The third set was all CIU as the Rams jumped out to a 10-0 lead. Sanjurjo and Lung were instrumental yet again as Lung had 5 kills, and Sanjurjo picked up two aces. Abbey Kleist recorded an ace in the set as well, helping CIU to a 25-11 set win.

Set Four: While set three was dominated by CIU, Bluefield bounced back in set four, knocking off the Rams 25-17. Kira Rymer was a bright spot with 2 kills in the set.

Set Five: A early kill by Lung and several errors by Bluefield gave CIU a spark in the final set. However, they were unable to capitalize on the opportunities and fell 15-8.

Game Notes:
  • Serve receive played an essential role in the match as CIU had 14 service errors and 10 service aces while Bluefield had 6 aces and 11 service errors.
  • Megan Lung had 21 kills and 2 aces while Alana Sanjurjo notched 20 kills and 2 aces of her own.
  • Kamelia De Jesus had her second consecutive 50-plus assist contest with 55 assists.
  • Freshman libero Emilia Niedzielska had 2 aces 17 digs, and 28 receptions.
  • Kira Rymer was reliable all evening as she recorded a .450 hitting percentage and had 12 kills.
What Coach Haver is saying:
"I am disappointed we didn't play CIU Volleyball for three of five sets. Bluefield was the more consistent team tonight. They deserve the win."
