Grayson, Ky – CIU men's basketball took on Kentucky Christian University Saturday afternoon for the second time this season. It was the third meeting all-time between the two programs with CIU coming out victorious in both contests. However, the Knights would right the ship this time around as they bested the Rams 92-86 in front of their home crowd. The loss put an end to a five-game conference winning streak for the Rams, the longest since their membership in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
How It Happened
First Half KCU 45 CIU 33: A slow start plagued CIU as the Knights jumped out to an 11-2 lead in the first 4:00 minutes of the half. CIU cut into the lead to 13-7 on an Eric Graham three-pointer, but KCU would extend to their advantage to 24-12 with 13:02 left in the half. Graham would pace the Rams in the half with 12 points 4-8 shooting, but CIU would still trail by 45-33 at the break.
Second Half KCU 92 CIU 86: A basket by Eric Graham and a deep ball by John Johnson cut the Knight lead to single digits to start the second half. Consistent shooting from Graham, Johnson, and Corey Benton helped the Rams slowly climb back onto the contest, cutting the lead to just two on an Arthur Pearson layup with 9:50 left in the game. Pearson would come alive down the stretch for the Rams, scoring 21 second-half points. CIU would be unable to gain the advantage, however, and would fall 92-86.
What Coach Stockman is saying:
"We were not mentally engaged to start the game and dug ourselves a hole in the first half. We will learn and get better from this experience."
