Rams Clash with Golden Tigers in Low-Scoring Affair

Columbia, SC – The CIU women's basketball team took on Brenau University for the first time this season on Wednesday night. The Rams had won their previous matchup with the Golden Tigers, which came in the form of a 60-52 win in January 2019. Unfortunately for CIU, the Rams would see a different outcome this time around as CIU was bested 50-43 by Brenau.

How It Happened:

First Half CIU 18 BU 18: The Rams trailed early on, but a three from Hannah Trawick cut into a small Golden Tiger advantage. A deep ball from Britney Brown at the buzzer to close the period would then tie the contest at 12. Both teams shot poorly in the first half, but the second quarter would only see a combined 12-points from both sides. The Golden Tigers shot a dismal 1 of 14 in the second quarter while CIU shot a slightly better 2 of 14. The Rams and Golden Tigers would be deadlocked at 18 at the half.

Second Half BU 50 CIU 43: The Rams struck first in the third quarter behind Tiona Walls, who helped the Rams to an early 22-18 lead. CIU was then paced for the rest of the period by Brown who scored 7-points in the quarter. The sophomore's scoring burst would help the Rams take a 31-30 lead into the final period. The fourth quarter saw the momentum swing in Brenau's direction as the lid came off the basket for the Golden Tigers. The Ram's opponent posted 20 points in the fourth period, which gave Brenau a 50-43 victory over CIU.

Game Notes:

  • Sophomore Britney Brown knocked down two triples her way to lead the Rams with 14 points.
  • Jordan Sprueill had 8 rebounds while also scoring 6 points.
  • CIU held the Golden Tigers to 30% shooting on the game and 7% shooting during the second quarter.
  • The Rams defense forced 20 Brenau turnovers
