Winston-Salem, NC – The CIU women's basketball team played their second and final non-conference game Tuesday night as they took on the Piedmont International University Bruins. While the game was not an AAC competition for the Rams, both teams are members of the NCCAA South Region. The meeting was the first-ever between PIU and CIU's women's basketball team even though the Bruins have been a familiar opponent for the Rams on the men's side.
CIU would trail early on in the first half down 9-8 in the first period. The game would stay tight through the half until the Bruins extended their advantage to 29-21. The Rams would battle back, however, and a steal by
Jordan Sprueill leading to a fast-break layup by
Alexis Ross would cut the lead down to 29-26. CIU entered halftime trailing by just four, 32-28.
The Bruins would open the second half on a 15-2 to run until a three-point dagger from
Alexis Ross would stop the bleeding.
Tiona Walls and
Lakelyn Malovic would battle hard for the Rams throughout the second half, but the size of the Bruins would overpower CIU. Despite a late run by the Rams, PIU pulled out the victory 60-58.
After their final non-conference contest, CIU will be looking ahead to the second portion of the AAC schedule. Coach
Temple Elmore commented, "I am looking forward to continued growth for each individual player and as a team."
CIU will travel to Tennessee on Saturday to battle the Buffs of Milligan College at 2 p.m.
