Rams Compete Against Ranked Opponent

COLUMBIA, SC – After a difficult start to 2020, the CIU women's basketball team faced one of their stiffest competitors of the year in the Bryan College Lions. The Lions entered the contest ranked #17 in the NAIA and holding a record of 15-1. The Lions also sat atop the AAC with a record of 11-0 in the conference. The Rams fought throughout the contest but were hindered by a slow start and fell 95-58.

How It Happened:

1st Half BC 48 CIU 22: The Rams were sluggish early on, allowing the Lions to take an early double-digit lead. CIU would finally get going midway through the first but would still trail 29-11. Jordan Sprueill and Hannah Trawick each had four points in the quarter. Tiona Walls would bring firepower off the bench scoring inside to start the second quarter. Despite this, the Rams would be unable to hold off a three-point barrage from the Lions and trailed 48-22 at the half.

2nd Half Bryan 95 CIU 38: The third period would see the Rams hold the Lions to their lowest scoring quarter of the game. However, CIU would be unable to muster much offense themselves until a short jumper from Lakelyn Malovic would help the Rams momentum to end the third The final period saw CIU rack up 27 points. Alexis Ross and Renee Carter both shot well with Ross posting 9-points and Carter scoring 7-points in the quarter. The surge would be too late; however and CIU relinquished the contest 95-58.

Game Notes:

  • Alexis Ross had a season-high 12-points on 5-13 shooting.
  • Senior Jordan Sprueill was solid as always scoring 11-points and recording 9-rebounds.
  • The Rams picked up outside shooting from senior Jay Mazyck who was a perfect 2-2 from behind the arc.
  • CIU won the battle inside, scoring 32 points in the paint to the Lions 26.

Up Next:

The Rams play only their second non-conference game of the season Tuesday, January 11th, as they travel to Piedmont International University.
