Women's Basketball Plays Tight Contest With Montreat

COLUMBIA, SC – The CIU Women's basketball team hosted the Montreat College Cavaliers Tuesday evening. CIU entered the game, coming off a loss to AAC power Bryan College. The contest was close throughout, but the Rams ultimately stumbled 55-47.

How It Happened

1st Half MC 24 CIU 23: The first quarter stayed close until the 2:00 minute mark when an and-one three-pointer plus the free throw by Larissa Lee would give the Rams an 11-6 advantage. A Joy Jones bucket and tough finish inside by sophomore Hannah Trawick would end the quarter with the Rams up 15-9. Renee Carter and Jordan Sprueill would battle in the paint for the CIU in the second quarter, but the Cavaliers would edge the Rams going into the half 24-23.

2nd Half MC 55 CIU 47: CIU would take their largest lead of the half 29-24 behind a Britney Brown steal and layup. However, the advantage would be short-lived as Montreat would get hot from deep to take a 43-39 lead into the final period. The Rams would tie the game at 43-43 behind after defensive turned to offense on Keniah Watkins steal and score. It would be the closest the Rams would get as Montreat would take the lead for good a possession later on a putback. CIU would only score twice more in regulation and fell 55-47.

Game Notes

  • Senior Jordan Sprueill scored in double figures for the seventh time this season, putting up 17 points.
  • Lakelyn Malovic battled hard in the paint for the Rams pulling down a season-high 6 rebounds.
  • The Rams forwards were crucial in keeping CIU in the game as the Rams out-scored the Cavaliers 30-26 in the paint.
