COLUMBIA, SC – The CIU Women's Basketball team took on Kentucky Christian in a double-overtime thriller Saturday afternoon. The meeting was the first between the Knights and the Rams. KCU and CIU are both newcomers to the Appalachian Athletic Conference with the Knights in their first year in the conference, and the Rams are in their second year. KCU would get the better of CIU in the inaugural matchup 102-99.
How It Happened
1st Half KCU 41 CIU 41: The Rams started the game trailing 11-4 until Queeneka Howard, and Tiona Walls scored on back to back plays to cut the lead to 11-8. Despite scoring from Keniah Watkins and Britney Brown, the Rams would trail 23-15 at the end of the first quarter. Jordan Sprueill would begin to make a more significant impact on the game in the second quarter helping the Rams cut the lead to 23-22. A few possessions later, after a Knight basket Mary Catherine Outlaw would drill a three to tie the game at 25-25. The Knights would pull away, but the Rams would bounce back to and heading into the Half tied at 42-42.
2nd Half KCU 102 CIU 99: Spruiell would lead the Rams in the third quarter helping the Rams to jump out to an 11 advantage 55-44, with 3:45 remaining in the quarter CIU would extend their lead to their 13 but would still only lead by 11 at the end of the third. However, the Rams would give up 22 points in the third quarter and would find themselves tied at the end of 4, 75-75. The Rams would trail throughout the first overtime until a huge three from Britney Brown tied the game at 89-89 to send it into double overtime. CIU would battle hard in the final overtime but fall by three.
Game Notes
- Britney Brown led the Rams scoring her season-high with 19 points and hit the game-tying three-pointer in overtime.
- Jordan Sprueill continued her strong start to her season, scoring 16 points making 6 of 7 free throws.
- Larissa Lee shot 50% from the field, including a stellar 3-6 from three-point range.
