Volleyball Returns Home Against 2nd Place Skyhawks

By Gordie Frierson

COLUMBIA, SC - The CIU Rams faced a challenge Tuesday night as they hosted the Point University Skyhawks who boasted a 9-1 conference record. The Skyhawks entered the contest sitting in second place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference South Division and third overall in the conference. The Rams came into the match looking to climb out of fifth-place in the South Division. Point would prove too much for CIU on this occasion, however, winning three sets to none.

How it Happened

CIU would challenge Point through the first set, finding themselves tied with the Skyhawks on multiple occasions. Andrea Salas would knot the game at 11-11 after consecutive aces. Point pulled ahead but the Rams again found themselves deadlocked with the Skyhawks this time at 22-22. Errors would drag CIU down and Point would win the set 25-23.

The second set would see Point ahead 10-5 after a series of service aces. Attacks from Lily Tang and De'Asija Harden would help the Rams get within two points but that would be as close as CIU would get. Point seized the game 25-18.

Megan Lung would come alive and record eight kills during the third set.  However, this would not be enough to overcome strong play from the Skyhawks. Point would win the set 25 - 21 after a hard-fought battle with the Rams.

Box Score Highlights

  • De'Asija Harden and Megan Lung would both record twelve kills, with eight of Lungs kills coming in the final set.

  • Despite losing on the scoreboard the Rams had more aces than the Skyhawks posting seven to the Skyhawks five.

  • Andrea Salas filled the stat sheet with 4 aces and 7 digs
