Rams Win Crucial AAC Contest

COLUMBIA, SC - The CIU Rams picked up a crucial 3-1 Appalachian Athletic Conference win Tuesday night over the St. Andrews University Knights. The Rams entered the contest sitting one game under .500 and finished the evening with a 18-18 record overall and 7-10 record in the conference. The win was crucial in a tight race in the conference to qualify for the AAC Tournament. The win also avenged the Rams 3-0 loss at the hands of the Knights nearly a month ago on September 24th.

How It How Happened

The first set of the evening saw a strong attack by the Rams across the board. Lily Tang, Aniya Marshall, De'Asija Harden, and Megan Lung all recorded at least one kill in the first propelling the Rams to a to 25-18 st win. The Rams never trailed in the set due in part to a solid defensive showing from Carla Cauchi.

Set two would begin with a kill by Megan Lung and the Rams would themselves ahead on the scoreboard for most of the set. CIU's lead would see their largest lead of the game at eight points 19-11. A kill by Gabriela Vega would propel the Rams on a scoring run culminating in a game-winning Aniya Marshall kill giving CIU a 25-17 win.

Set three would not go as smoothly for the Rams. The Knights would be determined to not go down without a fight and quickly took a lead to begin the set. The Rams would be unable to stop the bleeding the St. Andrews advantage ballooned to nine points 14-5. The Rams would try to fight back behind a handful of Lung kills but would fall 25-17.

The final set would prove to be the most competitive as the Rams battled the Knights in a back and forth affair. St. Andrews would have a 24-23 lead until consecutive kills by Harden would put the Rams back in front. The Rams and Knights would trade errors until St. Andrews made one too many mistakes and CIU would pull out the 27-25 win.

Game Notes

  • Most notably Megan Lung recorded a season-high 26 kills quietly in the match.

  • Mackenzie Sanchez quietly had another impressive night with a season-high 51 assists.

  • The win moved the Rams into 4th place in the AAC South Division with the win greatly strengthening the cause for an AAC Tournament berth.

What Coach Haver is saying

"This was a really important win for us. The girls knew it and they showed up tonight. Everyone did their part and gave maximum effort. I don't just mean the six on the court or even the bench-- they were on fire. But the Game Opps staff was great, and the fans.... We have the best fans in the AAC. They really supported us well and represented our school in a positive manner. Our fans matched the intensity of every hard-fought rally. Win or lose, we had their support, and we felt it. Carla, Bruna, and Drea dug exceptionally well for us tonight. Meg was a monster with 26 kills. De played the smartest game of her career. Niya and Gabi were a strong blocking force. Lily was dependable in the front and backrow. Mackenzie was our quarterback this evening and is now just 100 assists shy of 1000 career assists. Our serving was aggressive. All in all, a great performance tonight. I am looking forward to carrying this momentum over to our Friday and Saturday matches."
