COLUMBIA, SC - Home court advantage would not be evident in this year's Columbia International and Truett-McConnell volleyball series. TMU would come out on top of CIU Tuesday night at the Moore Fitness Center. The Rams and Bears split the season series 1-1, as CIU had defeated their conference rivals previously this season on the TMU campus in Cleveland, GA. The Rams move to 5-10 in the conference after the Tuesday evening loss, while the Bears jump to 9-8 in the conference.
How It Happened
The first set would see the Rams fall behind the Bears 3-0 off a Ranavia Neal block. Neal would go on to record six blocks in the evening contributing to the Bears astounding eleven total blocks. Lily Tang, who was consistent for the Rams all night, helped bring the Rams back to a 5-5 tie after a strong kill. The Rams would take 15-10 lead off an Aniya Marshal kill but TMU would fight back to tie the game at 16. Later in the set, CIU would have a 22-20 lead but the Bears would creep ahead fittingly win the set on a block, 25-23.
The second set began tight, but the Bears would fight for a 15-10 advantage. Kills by Lily Tang would help keep the Rams close, however, TMU would extend their lead to 21-16. Unfortunately for CIU, the Bears would be unrelenting in their defensive play and win the set 25-17.
An entertaining third set would conclude the evening as the Rams would benefit from the lively home crowd. The attack of De'Asija Harden and Gabriela Vega kept the Rams ahead through a large portion of the set. However, TMU would hang around and take a 25-24 lead until a kill by Vega and a block by Marshall would put the Rams ahead 26-25. Despite holding the late lead errors would cause the Rams to yield the last three points of the set to the Bears and TMU would get the win 28-26.Â
