Rams Pick Up First Win of the Year

The Columbia International University Women's Basketball team welcomed the Bulldogs of Union College to the Moore Fitness Center on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The game was a make up from December 8 when the game was postponed due to snow. The Rams took control of the game early on and pick up their first win with a 58-53 victory over the Bulldogs.

1st Quarter Highlights:
  • Each team struggled to get things going after the opening whistle, but the Rams got on the board first with a layup by Queeneka Howard
  • The Bulldogs would tie the game after two free throws, but the Rams would score five straight points thanks to Keniah Watkins and Britney Brown
  • With a minute left in the quarter the Rams were able to push their lead to seven after another jumper from Watkins
  • Hannah Trawick closed out the quarter with two free throws and the Rams led 15-9 after ten minutes
2nd Quarter Highlights:
  • The Rams scored the first five points of the quarter off a two by Renee Carter and three pointer by Watkins
  • After a Bulldogs basket the Rams would regain their double digit lead off a three from Larissa Lee
  • The two teams would go back and forth, but numerous occasions saw the Rams regain a double figure lead
  • The Bulldogs would score the last points of the half, but the Rams led 29-21 at the break
3rd Quarter Highlights:
  • The Rams opened the quarter up on a 8-0 to push their lead to sixteen points, Jordan Sprueill had four points during the run
  • The Rams continued to hold onto the double digit lead for the whole quarter
  • The Rams and Bulldogs struggled in the final two minutes of the quarter, but the Rams got a layup from Sam Wammock and a free throw by Sprueill to close the quarter and lead 44-31
4th Quarter Highlights:
  • The Bulldogs got on the board first with a three to open the quarter and trim the lead to ten points
  • The Bulldogs would cut the lead to five, but free throw by Wammock and jumper from Brown pushed it back to eight points
  • With just over three minutes left in the game the Bulldogs trimmed the Rams lead to two, but on the next possession Howard would hit a three for the Rams
  • The Bulldogs would come right back and trim the lead to two once again with 1:44 left in the game
  • The Rams hit their free throws down the stretch as they went 7-for-7 
  • As the final horn sounded the Rams picked up their first win of the year, 58-53
Box Score Highlights:
  • The Rams shot 33.3% (20-of-60) from the floor and were 14-of-20 from the charity stripe, while the Bulldogs shot 29.8% (17-of-57) and were only 5-of-25 from beyond the arch...The Rams limited their turnovers for the game with 13 and forced the Bulldogs to turn the ball over 22 times...The Bulldogs led in rebounds with 50 compared to the Rams 38...The Rams also had 11 steals with Britney Brown having four...Jordan Sprueill led the Rams with a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds...Keniah Watkins had 12 points for the Rams...Britney Brown had a solid game with nine points, six assists, four steals, and three rebounds...Queeneka Howard and Sam Wammock each had seven points... The Bulldogs were led by LeAsia Linton with 16 points.
Up Next: The Rams will have a short break as they are back in action on Wednesday when they host Bluefield College at 5:30 pm.
