Overtime Penalty Kick Lifts the Rams to Victory
Overtime Penalty Kick Lifts the Rams to Victory
The Columbia International University women's soccer team was back on the pitch after having almost two week off. The Rams made the most of being back on the field as they hosted Guilford College and beat them 2-1, in overtime. With the win the Rams move to 3-1 on the season, while the Quakers fall to 2-3.

The first fifteen minutes belonged to the Quakers as they got three shots off. However, the tides would start to turn in favor of the Rams after a shot from Alanna Battermann. The Rams would keep the pressure on the Rams as the Quakers were struggling to get past the half line. The Rams were awarded for all their work at the thirty-nine minute mark as Rebecca Giancana was able to find Rebekah Reinhard in the box. Reinhard was able to get a quick shot off as she had three Quakers surrounding her and the goalie crashing, but a quick little kick right under the goalie and the ball was in the back of the net for her first collegiate goal and it gave the Rams the lead. The Rams would go into the half leading with that goal.

Each team would come out of the second half looking to possess the ball and find their footing so they didn't wear themselves out on a hot summer day. Each team would have a few shots, but the Quakers were able to get on the board when Kelsey Reilly was able to strike the ball past the Rams keeper. Each team were looking for the goal to put them ahead, but neither could find it so we were heading to overtime.

Overtime belonged to the Rams as they had the only shots in overtime. Battermann was able to get a shot off two minutes in, but the Quakers goalie was there to make the save. Then after playing 94:17 the Quakers fouled Janie Holland in the box and the Rams were awarded a penalty kick. Holland took the kick and was looking to give the Rams the golden goal and their third win of the year. She was able to strike the ball past the keeper and convert to give the Rams a 2-1 victory.

Columbia International out shot the Quakers 10-8, but the Quakers held the edge in shots on goal, 6-5...Each team had six corner kicks...Sam Wammock picked up the win and had three saves, while Angel Simpson played in the first half and had two saves...This was the first ever meeting between the two schools.

"It was great to get back on the field today," said Head Coach Kara Farnsworth. "After spending the last week in the gym I know the girls were happy to feel the grass under their feet. The girls played hard tonight and really persevered. I'm proud of the way we played and I'm definitely happy with the outcome."

Columbia International will have some time off before their next game. The next time the Rams will be back on the field is Wednesday, September 27 at North Greenville University at 7 p.m.
