Rams Blast Bruins
The Columbia International University men's soccer team got back in the win column with a convincing 6-0 win over rival Bob Jones University. The Rams move to 3-8-2 on the year, while the Bruins fall to 4-9.
The Rams came out on fire and with an intensity that was unmatched by the Bruins.
Ricky Prestridge would get off the first shot of the game just over a minute in, but that shot went wide. Prestridge continued to work and at 14:59 was rewarded for it as he found a loose ball in the box and was able to deposit it behind the keeper. Just fifty-nine seconds later the Rams would score their second goal as
Paul Grandacarpio got a cross into the box and Nheit Rocham was able to hit a rocket into the corner to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. The Rams would continue to control the game and in the thirty-ninth minute
Hastin McGill was able to go flying and get a foot on the pass from
Kevin Garces to give the Rams their third goal. With just forty seconds remaining two freshman,
Matt Crews and Garces would hook up for a goal. Garces was able to get another cross in and Crews was able to hit a perfectly placed ball into the left corner to give the Rams a 4-0 lead at the half.
The second half was much of the same as the Rams didn't take their foot off the gas and continued to attack the Bruins goal. In the fifty-seventh minute
Victor Maron was able to flick a ball over the keeper to
Doran Battermann who gave it a little touch right into the goal. With the Rams leading 5-0, they continued to look for more and they got that in the seventy-ninth minute as
Bryce Holdman got a through ball in and
Jeremiah Ruth was able to get it under the keeper for the Rams sixth and final goal. The Bruins best chance of the night came at the 82:21 mark as they were awarded a penalty kick. The Bruins Jesse Rush stepped to the line and gave it a good boot, but the Rams goalie
Hugo Lemus was there to make a huge save and perserve the shutout. When the final whistle sounded the Rams walked off with a 6-0 victory.
Columbia International led in the shot category with 22 overall and 10 on goal, while Bob Jones had eight overall and three on goal...The Rams also held a slight 3-2 edge in corners...Tonight was a night of collegiate first as
Kevin Garces picked up his first collegiate point and assist, while
Matt Crews scored his first collegiate goal...
Hugo Lemus had three saves for the Rams as they shutout the Bruins.
"The guys came out and ready to go with a lot of intensity," said Head Coach
Bill Brindley. "We had a plan for tonight and have been working on a lot of new offensive strategies so it was very encouraging to see them work tonight. I'm proud of the guys and the way they came out and I look forward to what this win might mean for the rest of our season."
