Box Score The men's soccer team of Columbia International University had one more game before a small break for Labor Day. The Rams traveled to Lawrenceville, GA to take on the Grizzlies of Georgia Gwinnett College. This was the first ever meeting between these two teams and it was a great game, but the Rams fell to the Grizzlies by the final score of 1-0. With the loss the Rams move to 2-2 on the season, while the Grizzlies move to 3-0-1.
The first half was a very possession driven half as each team had a couple offensive chances, but neither team was able to get any constant rhythm to keep the pressure on the opposing defense. The Grizzlies were the first team to get a shot off, but it was not until almost the 13th minute. The Grizzlies would take two more shots before the Rams Paul Grandacarpio took a shot off a free kick that went right into the Grizzlies goalies chest. The Rams were able get one more shot off in the half as Thomas Izaguirre was able to take a shot in traffic, but the Grizzlies goalie was there to make the save. After that shot the Rams took two corner kicks and the Grizzlies took one shot, but neither team would score and they would go into half scoreless.
The second half provided a little more energy as the ball was moving up and down the field. The Grizzlies were able to strike early as they Jake Gurr scored for them just over two minutes into the second half. The Grizzlies continued to put pressure on the Rams, but they couldn't find any space behind Luke Brooks. The Rams lone shot of the second half came from Hastin McGill with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game. Neither the Rams nor Grizzlies would score after the early second half goal. As the full 90 minutes concluded the Grizzlies took the 1-0 win over the Rams.
The Rams offense struggled a little as they had three shots with all on goal...Grandacarpio, McGill, and Izaguirre each had a shot for the Rams...Brooks was solid once again in goal for the Rams as he had 6 saves.
"I was really pleased with the effort of our team tonight especially in the first half. Georgia Gwinnett College is as good as any team we will play all season as they recieved votes in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 poll. We really battled all throughout the game and Luke Brooks was huge in goal for us coming up with key saves to be named man of the match. It's been a total team effort as multiple guys have stepped up as we've had so many injuries to key guys on our team," said coach James Whitaker.
The Rams will have a week off before they travel to Greensboro, NC to take on Laurel College at 1 p.m. on September 10th.
