Late Goals Spoil Rams Home Opener

After opening their season with five away games the Columbia International men's soccer team returned home for their season opener against St. Andrews University. The Rams played tough and hard throughout all 90 minutes, but fell short as the Knights scored three second half goals to win 3-1. With the loss the Rams fall to 3-3 on the season, while the Knights improve to 5-2.

The Knights came out of the gate strong as they were able to get two shots on goal in the first fifteen seconds of the game, but Luke Brooks was there to make two fantastic saves. Neither team would get a shot off until Alex Hackett was able to receive a pass from Doran Battermann and strike the ball perfectly into the bottom left corner. The goal gave the Rams an early lead only 6:24 into the game. Both teams would get a couple more shots off throughout the period, but neither team was able to find the back of the net. The Rams would take the one goal lead into the half.

Both teams came out of the second half looking for an important goal as the Rams were looking to go up by two goals and the Knights were looking to tie the game. Each team would get two shots off in the opening nine minute of the second half before the Knights would strike. At 54:53 the Knights were able to even the score at one. The Knights were able to pick up their second goal of the game just under 20 minutes later. Seeing the Knights score their second goal of the game really pushed the Rams as they wanted to even the score. The Rams put pressure on the Knights continuously as they were able to get some great shots off, but just couldn't find the equalizer. The Knights would go on to score their third goal of the game and win the game by a final score of 3-1.

The Rams had 11 shots with three being on goal...Hackett led the Rams with five shots and the lone goal...Battermann was able to pick up his first point of the season with the assist on Hackett's goal...Luke Brooks had four saves for the Rams...The Rams now move to 1-4 all-time against the Knights.

The Rams will be back in action of Saturday as they host Pensacola Christian College at 7 p.m.
