CIU Athletics announced the hiring of Richie White as the next head coach of the CIU esports program on Wednesday, June 18.
White has been a part of the program since its inception in 2021 in various capacities, including as an athlete and, most recently, assisting in the broadcast of CIU Overwatch and CIU Super Smash Bros. as a play-by-play commentator. White has a wealth of knowledge, specifically in Overwatch, as a former Overwatch athlete, but his gaming IQ is spread across a plethora of titles and both PC and console games.
"I'm honored to step into the role of Head Coach for our Esports program here at CIU. I believe in the value of hard work, healthy competition, and the joy that comes from using our God-given talents to grow both in the game and in life," said White. "My mission is to build a team culture where we compete with excellence, have fun, and most importantly, leave a Christ-centered impact on each other and our campus community."
White is already deeply integrated into the CIU community, serving for three years in the university's admissions department, and currently holds the role of Student Activities Coordinator for CIU Student Life.
"To have someone like Richie, who is interconnected within the fabric of the institution, take on this role is a huge plus for us," said CIU Director of Athletics Stefan Vasiloff, "As a former CIU student-athlete himself, Richie understands the emphasis we place on spiritual growth and relationship building within our programs. That understanding, combined with his collegiate gaming experience, will serve him well as he leads our esports athletes."
CIU competes in Playfly College Esports Rocket League, Overwatch 2, and Super Smash Bros. and will resume competition this coming September.
