Javon Gilliard

Javon Gilliard is entering his second year as Assistant Coach and first year as the Strength and Conditioning coach at CIU. Before coming to CIU Gilliard was the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Denmark Technical College where he left as the coach with the highest number of wins in the school's history.

In his first season (2011-2012), he lead Denmark Tech Women's Basketball team to their first winning season in school history. Gilliard also won the college's first ever Conference Championship. Under his leadership Charity Harris was named Region X Conference Player of the Year, Kierra Campbell was named to the All Conference Team and Gilliard  was named Coach of the Year.  This was significant because all of these accolades were all a first for Denmark Technical College.  Charity Harris also lead the Nation in steals, and as a team the Lady Panthers lead the Nation in scoring averaging 94 points a game and field goal percentage.  The Lady Panthers went undefeated at home.

In 2012-2013 Gilliard lead the Lady Panthers to their 2nd Region X Conference Championship and the college's first ever Region X Conference Tournament title. Tiyanna Burwell was named Conference Player of the Year and First Team All Conference, and Khadrea Rembert became the college's first player ever to be named Most Outstanding Player (Conference Tournament). Tiyanna Burwell,Christhea Mitchell, Cierra Kendricks and Tonya Jackson were named to the All Tournament Team. Gilliard was named Conference Coach of the year and Outstanding Coach. The Lady Panthers also set a conference tournament record by scoring 124 points in the semifinals against Tri-County Technical College.

In 2013-2014 Gilliard lead his team to a huge milestone by punching a ticket to the NJCAA DIVISION ONE NATIONAL TOURNAMENT in Salina, Kansas which was also a first for Denmark Technical College. The Lady Panthers won their 3rd Region X  Conference Championship and 2nd Region X Conference Tournament Championship. Cierra Kendricks and Christhea Mitchell were named first team All Conference, Cierra Kendricks was also named Conference Tournament MVP, Colleen Leung and Christhea Mitchell were named to the All Tournament Team, and Colleen Leung also lead the nation in 3 point percentage. Gilliard was named Conference Coach of the Year and Outstanding Coach.

In 2014-2015 Gilliard lead the Lady Panthers to their 4th Region X Conference Championship and 3rd Region X Tournament

Championship. Gilliard coached the College's first women's basketball All American, National leading scorer (averaging 28.8 points a game), and National Steal leader (averaging 5 steals a game) Iyanna Jones. Jones was also Conference player of the year and Tournament MVP . Jhanice Stokes and Crystal Owens were named All Conference and All Tournament team. Gilliard was named Conference Coach of the Year and Outstanding Coach.

In 2015-2016 Gilliard coached the college's 2nd All American, Kierra Mitchell.  Mitchell was number 11 in the country for scoring averaging 21 points a game, while Jhanice Stokes lead the nation in blocks. 

In 2016-2017 Gilliard guided the Lady Panthers to their 4th Region X Conference Tournament. Zaria Snipes was named Conference Tournament MVP. Jordan Dawson, JaBree Jones, and Nyree Mahoney were named All Tournament Team. As a team the Lady Panthers lead the Nation in free throw attempts and free throws made.  Zaria Snipes lead the nation in assist and second for steals. Jordan Dawson, Zaria Snipes, and JaBree Jones were named to the All Conference Team, and Gilliard was named Outstanding Coach. Gilliard leaves Denmark Tech as the only women's basketball coach in school history to win 100 plus games.

Gilliard coached at Allen University, Bennett College, and Allendale Fairfax High School. Gilliard has also worked for Scouting Evaluation Inc. and served as Director at the YWCA in Greensboro, NC.  Gilliard is currently the director of scouting for USA College Network for international high school boys and girls basketball players. He is also a certified distributor for Herbalife24 Nutrition.
