BARBOURVILLE, Ky. — CIU women's basketball picked up a road win Saturday afternoon, defeating Union Commonwealth University 62–55 in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
After trailing 38–29 at halftime, the Rams turned the tide with a strong defensive effort after the break. CIU held Union Commonwealth to just seven points in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 40–41 entering the final period. The Rams then outscored the hosts 21–10 in the fourth quarter, taking control late with timely stops and efficient free-throw shooting.
Jerchel Geathers-Washington led CIU with 16 points and eight rebounds, going 7-of-11 from the field and adding a steal. Katie Johnson followed with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists, while Audrey Teasley and Selah George each added nine points. Katlynn Chinn chipped in six points and five rebounds, and the Rams converted 16 free throws to help seal the win.
CIU forced 23 turnovers and scored 17 points off those miscues while holding Union Commonwealth to 22.2 percent shooting in the fourth quarter.
The Rams return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 14, traveling to face Montreat College at 5:30 p.m. ET.
