COLUMBIA - Mariah Leinbach hit a free throw with two seconds remaining to send CIU women's basketball into overtime with Kentucky Chrisitan on Saturday. The Rams (4-14, 3-13 AAC) would hold on for the overtime victory 70-67 to move to .500 (4-4) at home for the year.
After both teams struggled for the upper hand in the early portion of the first quarter, the Rams would open up a 20-11 lead on a
Jessica North layin after one. CIU only mustered six points in the second quarter, however, and nursed a one-point (26-25) lead into the break.
CIU led by as much as nine (47-38) in the third quarter as the Rams received six points in the third period from Leinbach. Despite two 3-pointers and seven points from
Madison Hatcher in the fourth quarter, the Rams found themselves down by one point with 11 seconds remaining. Leinbach would draw the foul and make the front end of a pair of free throws to extend the game.
An end-of-shot-clock 3-pointer from
Daja Taylor highlighted the overtime period as CIU pulled away for the 70-67 victory.
North battled in the paint for a massive double-double with 13 rebounds and 12 points. Leinbach posted a double-double as well, pouring in 18 points and ten boards.
Keniah Watkins scored several clutch buckets on her way to 16 points and six rebounds. Watkins shot 50% from the field and was a perfect 5-for-5 from the foul line. Hatcher's veteran presence was felt as she stuffed the stat sheet with nine points, four rebounds, and three assists.
