LAURINBURG, N.C. - CIU women's basketball took a trip to North Carolina on Wednesday afternoon to face off against St. Andrews University (N.C.). The Rams took down the Knights earlier this season, and the story played out similarly tonight. CIU advanced to 9-11 on the season and 8-8 in conference play with a 74-59 win over St. Andrews.
Despite eight points from Tearra Cook in the first, CIU came out a bit sluggish and trailed 19-16 after the game's first ten minutes. However, the Rams stepped up on both ends of the court in the second, scoring 22 points and holding the Knights to only 13. Queeneka Howard tied the game 30-30 at the 3:32 minute mark with a free throw and gave CIU a one-point advantage after a second free throw. The Rams held onto this lead, going into the half up 38-32.
CIU's defense was even more formidable in the third, holding St. Andrews to only ten points. The Knights cut the deficit to just four points (38-34) at the beginning of the third, but they could not answer the Rams' offense as they went up 56-42 before the final period. CIU held onto this lead for the remainder of the contest, leading by as much as 20 at the 6:25 minute mark. The Knights played better in the final period, but St. Andrews' 17 fourth-quarter points were not enough to change the game's outcome.
Zhani Thompson continues to light up the stat sheet with 16 points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and two assists. After tonight's performance, Thompson is now the team's leading scorer. Cook poured in 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Hannah Wilkerson stayed consistent with 11 points. The bench played an essential role in tonight's win, as Howard and Jasmine Twitty both scored nine points with 17 combined rebounds. Madison Hatcher also chipped in seven points.
Tonight CIU was 22-of-59 (37.3%) from the field and 25-of-33 (75.8%) from the line. The Rams outrebounded the Knights 47-39. They also collected 13 steals and three blocks.
What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying: "Proud of the team effort today. It hasn't been easy on the road, but the girls locked in and all did their part to secure the win. Looking forward to our home game this week!"
