Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | hwilkerson

Women's Basketball falls to Milligan despite admirable offensive effort from Cook and Wilkerson

MILLIGAN, TENN. - CIU women's basketball hit the road for their first away game of the season, battling Milligan University (Tenn.) on Tuesday night. The Rams forced the Buffalos into overtime but came up short in a 72-69 heartbreaker. CIU is now 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play.

The Rams took the lead less than two minutes into the game with a layup from Tearra Cook; however, their defense was not able to hold off the Buffalos, as CIU trailed 16-13 after the first quarter. It was a back-and-forth contest in the second, but CIU fell behind by double-digits after the break. Contributions from Zhani Thompson and Hannah Wilkerson in the fourth quarter allowed CIU to claw back and take the lead (61-60) with less than a minute remaining in regulation. However, a late foul on a rebound allowed Milligan to go to the line and tie up the game, forcing overtime. The Rams made a slight push in the game's extra 5' minutes, but it was not enough to overcome the Buffalo offensive burst in overtime.

Cook led the way for the Rams with her first double-double of the season with 20-points and 15 rebounds. Wilkerson, the team's leading scorer on the season, had another impressive night, dropping 18. Thompson also recorded her first double-double off the bench with 11-points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Jaylyn Twitty was a key piece to the Rams' game plan working her way into the rotation and scoring eight points. Unfortunately, CIU was unable to put the ball in the basket at an efficient clip, shooting 27-of-72 (37.5%) on the night and going 3-of-20 (15.0%) from behind the arc.

What Coach Danielle Fleming is saying: "Games like this hurt, but for our young group it is better to learn now then later. I'm proud of the effort to fight back. We were one free throw violation from winning. We'll learn and get better as the season goes on. I'm proud of Cook tonight, she battled hard."

Up Next: CIU will stay on the road and will head to Athens, Tenn. to take on Tennessee Wesleyan on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 2 PM.
